Pet sitter checklist
What to leave for your pet sitter
A good handoff takes ten minutes and saves your sitter from guessing. Here's everything worth writing down before you go, with examples you can copy.
Food
Say exactly what, how much and when. “A scoop” means different things to different people.
Example
Breakfast 7:30 AM: 1½ cups salmon kibble. Dinner 6:00 PM: same. Treats are in the jar by the door, two a day at most. No table scraps; chicken upsets her stomach.
Walks and bathroom breaks
How long, where, and anything that goes wrong on a leash.
Example
Morning walk around 8, about 20 minutes, the loop around the park. She pulls toward squirrels. Use the harness, not the collar. Last yard break at 10 PM.
Medications
The name, the dose, the time and how you actually get it into them. Say what to do if a dose is missed.
Example
Allergy tablet, 1 a day at 9 PM, hidden in a treat. If she spits it out, try peanut butter. If you miss one, skip it; don't double up.
The vet and an emergency contact
Your sitter shouldn't have to search for this during a bad moment.
Example
Riverside Animal Clinic, (555) 555-0199. If you can't reach me, call my neighbor Jamie, (555) 555-0123. She has a key and can approve treatment.
Getting in and around the house
Door codes, where the key is, the alarm, and which rooms are off limits.
Example
Side door code is on the note I gave you. Alarm panel is to the left; you have 30 seconds. Keep the bedroom door closed. The cat hides in there.
Quirks and comforts
The things only you know.
Example
Scared of thunder. She'll want to sit with you. Barks at the mail carrier, then stops. Sleeps on the blue bed, not the couch.
How you'd like to hear from them
Set expectations so nobody worries.
Example
A quick photo after the morning walk is perfect. Text me for anything odd. Call if it's urgent.
